the people here....

Thursday, August 11, 2005

Actually, I really wondered why do so many Singaporeans want to migrate here?? (To avoid being accused of something, I shall not name the country here.) 90% of the Singaporean students who studied here, all wanted to get a PR and stay here for the rest of their lives. I know that this is a good place, with the lovely climate, green nature environment and the laid-back relaxing lifestyle, but don’t they mind being discriminated all the time? Alright, that was an overstatement. Not all the times, it only occurred sometimes, but these few times that happened to me are already sufficient to make me want to pack my bags and fly home. I mean I can’t live with people giving me looks that say, “Here’s another one of those (I-cant-stand-them) Asians”, followed by rolling their eyes. If not, some people were actually so surprised that Asians can speak English. Hello, duh?!

When I was out doing grocery shopping with a girlfriend this afternoon, I brought a blu-tack and a highlighter from the supermarket. As it didn’t have the hole-puncher I was looking for, I went into another store looking for it. This particular store usually has a lady employee who will stand at the entrance, checking the bags of those who walked out empty-handed to ensure that they did not steal anything from the shop. And so, as I couldn’t find the hole-puncher again, we walked out through the entrance.

You should see the eagerness that particular lady employee zoomed up to us, “I like to check your bags please?” She had those mistrusting looks in her eyes that were screaming very loudly “I’m very suspicious of you Asians!!” and to her glee, when she spotted the blu-tack, she started questioning us, “Where did that come from?” and when I managed to answer that. She started off a lecture instead of “You should have let me check your bags before you come in; Our shop sells the same products blah blah blah…” *roll eyes* No one had ever wanted to check my bags when I entered the shop during the whole one and half years I was here.

So finally, she ended with “I let you off this time but don’t do it again.” What’s your problem?! Are you implying that I stole it?!?! And you were soooo gracious and kind that you let me off?!?!?! To make things worse, a strange old man (her friend) thought that he was being so intellectual and had to make a funny joke out of my situation. My friend was right, I should have shoved the receipt into her face and demanded that she go through all the items in the receipt to make sure that there was no extra item that appeared from nowhere. Damn her. Thanks to her, I certainly won’t be going to that shop for a looong time.
