Testing with children #2 - day five

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

LAST DAY!

I was quite excited that I would be finally be completed my testing, and all I need to do is to finish testing with my adults sample, so that I could finally start analyzing the data and start the writing again for the Mr. Thesis.

Testing with children #2 - day four

Monday, August 27, 2007

I started with the pre-primary today. Really, when compared to our own children, the kiddys here so much matured. They scare me sometimes. LOL. Anyway, working with the younger children is slightly more relaxed than the Year 1s. I wonder why... :)

#1-Boy. This is a smart little boy. He could logically repeated all the instructions that I told him while he was doing the FIT. First, put a dot INSIDE all the shapes on the right.... And the cutest thing is, he is also at the stage where no matter what people do, it must be FAIR. Equal slices of pizzas, cakes; taking turns at the swings; voting to make a decision; this is where the funny part comes in. The last story scenario: "If you want to buy a Mars bar, but there's only one left at the supermarket and some other person reaches for it at the same time, what would you do?" This little boy exclaimed loudly after I presented all the possible options, "I don't like all the options! They should break the chocolate into the half and share it!" LOL. I did say the story takes place in a supermarket, right? ^^

#2-Girl. I only learned that this little girl was the daughter of the teacher of their class. How cute.
#3-Girl.

#4-Boy. This little boy told me that his favourite game is "Paper, scissors, rock" so when he requested for a break, we played this game together. 1 round = 3 times to decide winner. So we played. At the beginning, I didn't really think much about it and just motioned an action that came to mind.. For this break, he won the first round, and I won the second round. At the second break, he won both rounds. Ah.. Somehow playing this game made him quite excited, so he was asking for more breaks than necessary. But at the same time, it was a good motivation for him to finish a part of the task really quickly so that he got to play "Paper, scissors, rock" again. Anyway, I figured the reason why he kept on winning was because I weren't very serious yet. So I got a little serious. But.... He still won both rounds during the 3rd break, again. (-_-) He was getting elated, I was getting a little depressed. Am I sure I couldn't win against a mere little boy at Paper, scissors, rock? So I tried harder at the games. Anyway, in the end, I sent a happy, jumping little boy back in the class, while his companion was smiling on the outside, but shattering in the inside. *stared at fist* (T^T)

***
LUNCHTIME.

I had my sandwich while sitting on their little benches. The kids were playing around the grounds, and two little girls came up to me (#5 was one of them), exclaiming their memory was VERY GOOD! (I told them in the morning that I want to see how their minds worked when the teacher introduced me to their class.)

#5: I remembered when I was borned, my mother went to the donut factory besides the hospital.

Me: (O_o)
Ooh.. So what was the flavour of the donut? (Purposely~)

#5: Erm..I don't know... Oh! It was the normal donut. The cinnamon one. It is also my favourite!"

Me: *sweats*

Later I overheard her telling the teacher the same story, and I was quite impressed with the teacher's reaction, "Really? I didn't know they have donuts factory besides hopsitals?"

GirlA: I can remember when I was a baby, my mummy sang lullabys to me.

***

#5-Girl. This little girl was extremely excited everytime I went into their classroom to collect a kid. She will be looking at the me with her big eyes that screamed, "My turn~~~ my turn~~~~~" But she wasn't on my list when I checked for her name in the morning. Oh dear, she really get a little sad after that, went sulking in the corner. 'cos #2, #3 was her best friends. So best friends must do everything together? Luckily she didn't sulk very long. And the funny thing is, half-way in the afternoon, I received her consent form from the teacher. Did the mum come in just to give her consent form? (Hahha.. I shall not "stick any gold" on my face... LOL.)

#6-Girl. Woah, this little girl looks like the caucasian version of my niece. Really. While I was doing the testing with her, I can't help but kept on staring at her face. Anyway, since she was not that focused, I was thinking of trying the "Paper, scissors, rock" trick on her. Games = Focus. Unfortunately, when I asked her, "do you like Paper, scissors, rock?" She replied, "those are baby games~" *MAJ SWEATS* Anyway, later I learnt from her that the "easy peasy" that Noodle was telling me about has a even longer version, so I got a little excited and tried to remember the whole thing (so that later I can go back and tell Noodle mah), but the second time when I repeated it for her to check whether I got it correct, she said without much expression on her face, "Whatever, it doesn't really matter" -STAB- That's the second knife she plunged in me that day. LOL. Hmm..I can't remember the full length version liao, but it has 6 words and there was a "lemoon" or something like that~~

(^____________^)

Anyway, from there I went to meet Noodle and Cheryl in the city. I missed the 34 bus again, so I walked into the town to catch other buses. Just in time to hop onto an empty bus that was droven by a Singapore UNCLE. I think he was extremely bored, so we started talking.. Well, he started asking alot of questions. Anyway, this uncle was not as cuuute as the children, so I shall not repeat the conversation.

Met Noodle and Cheryl for a lovely dinner at Saigon. Yummy~~ Pork chop and chicken rice(s)~~~ Ah, please STOP ME next time if I want to order their coffee again okay? -_-; The food was good (minus the coffee). The company was good. Heheh. But hor, I seriously can't remember why we did it this monday :) Anyway, my conclusion? We should do this more often!! Heheh.. Next week next week :)

Testing with children #2 - day three

Friday, August 24, 2007

I met "I'm from Perth-not SG" boy's mum on the way up to this school this morning. No doubts I'm extremely grateful to all parents who have given their permission to let their child participate in my study, I'm quite nervous about talking to them, so I always tried to avoid them if possible. *sweats* CHICKEN! Lol.

Anyway, I managed to do 7 kids today! But in order to do so, the rule of the day is minimum interaction. Less talking, more doing. So although I done 7 kids today, there's hardly anything to describe about them. Haiz... Oh well, at least I can still say most of them moderately enjoyed just doing the tasks. :) Still, one thing I learnt about kids over this few days is- most of the them, at least the talkative ones, will most willingly volunteer their information even without asking! Lol.

#3-Boy.

Me: Do you think your teacher is pretty?

Boy #3: No..

Me: Do you think your mum is pretty? (I thought he would say Yes for this)

Boy #3: No..

Me: (puzzled) So who did you think is pretty??

Boy #3: Dad...

Me: Who's that? Is that your girl classmate? (as usual, didn't hear properly again)

Boy #3: No.. My Dad..

Me: Your dad?!??!?!

Boy #3: *nodded his head really proudly*

Me: Is he not supposed to be HANDSOME?

Boy #3: No... *shakes head* (and went on to say about the spiky hair of his father)

Me: *maj sweats*

#4-Boy. The first child that I tested who is truly interested in the stories that I'd created. (*^*) He listened to them attentively, thought about the choices carefully - anyway, I'm so touched by him!!! Awww~~ Can I give you a hug? and I'm sorry I'm mistook you as a punk. He has this bad boy look. Lol.

A little boy from the classroom. While I was waiting for the teacher to end her conversation with the assistant teacher, a little boy asked me, "Am I on your list?" (How cuuute~~~), so I asked for his name and checked the list for his name. Nope, he was not. You should have seen his disappointed face when I told him so. Awww.. Sorry dear, I wish you are on my list, but unfortunately, you're not. *hugs*

Anyway, hopefully, I can finish the testing on Monday, though there is still some kids available for me to do, I feel a little embarrassed troubling the school so long for my study. At least, the vice-principal didn't look too happy when I mentioned I might need a couple more days with the kids. Sigh, we see how it goes. Pehaps I should just be more thick-skinned abit and just do one more day with them.

testing with children #2 - Day Two

Thursday, August 23, 2007

I took it slow today, so it's more enjoyable for the kids and less stressful for me. Unfortunately then, I did fewer kids than I could. Just FOUR. (T^T)

Anyway.. the four kids today

#1-Girl. Hmm..I suddenly realized I always can't remember details about my first participant... Nande? But, she is another extremely sweet little girl too! :)

#2-Boy. Hehe, he's cute. Once he sat down, he farted twice, like a long sms ringtone. Lol. Well, it's either he farted, or it's his stomach. Either way, he looked quite embarrassed and was squirming around on his seat, so I just pretended I didn't hear anything. But for a while, I was worrying in my head whether should I ask him does he want to go to the toilet? Heheh, won't be nice if some accident happen.. Bleh. His father is from Sg, so hearing that, I exclaimed, "Oh, i'm from SG too!", <-- the 'too' in general mah.. but immediately, the little boy just had to clarify, "No, I'm from Perth, only my father from SG." *stares* *speechless me* Ok ok, I get it... Then while doing the stories task, he just have to strip "Gaga" of his collar, leaving him "naked" (as he phrased) or wrapping the collar around his tail, his head (like Rambo), his snout... ^^;;

#3-Boy. A good-looking storyteller. He started our conversation with "My nana (grandma) died on my sister's birthday." -_-;; Errr.... okay..... (quickly attempted to change topic) but anyway, during the 1 hr and 5 min we were together, yesh, that how long I took with him, we talked, or rather HE told me about his nana's orgin; counted 1-10 in italian for me; how he like to catch jellyfish (aren't they poisonous?!?!); have a whole shelf of them in jars at home, how he had to prevent his cat from breaking the jars; how his cat broke a jar this morning, so the jellyfish come alive again, then he has to put a stone on it; told me about his favourite video games; what did he at each level; what happened if he didn't get past a level; how he like to play paintballs; how he always win at paintball; how his sister beat him at paintballs one time; what are the colours he like, why he like the colour gold; why he like the gold power ranger; about teenage mutant ninja turtles, the jokes from teenage ninja turtles -- and becuase I think I can spend up to 45 minutes retelling what he told me, I just summarized the topics that he mentioned. Lol.

#4-Boy. The last little boy was very serious and focused in doing the tasks. Unfortunately, he was too serious.. so he took very long time to think at each question. *major sweats* But I felt a little bad for him, cos' I was timing to end before a specific time so that I could get back to Uni in time, so I didn't really interact with him much. Save time, quick quick, pack up and go. Sorry J~

testing with children #2 - day one

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

1st day of testing with young children again.

This time, the mood of testing was very different from my very first time of testing. Perhaps, it's because I woke up at 5.45am in the mood (ended up quite tired to really play with the kids genki-ly). Perhaps, the testing, I felt is more of a formal activity, with the school principals and teachers keeping an eye on me. Perhaps, it's doesn't help much that I'm doing my testing in the meeting room next to the vice-principal's room. Sounds travel you know. I can't meow, I can't snort, I can't even play a fool with them. Haiz.. I feel restricted. I kinda miss the previous opportunity of doing my testings in their big spacious lighted kitchen, while sitting on the comfortable-for-bottoms-but-not-so-comfortable-for-back beanbags.

Nevertheless, it was still good fun, though I'm abit short of patience today. -_- Unlike the previous testing, whereby the first little girl tired me out, an over-enthusiastic little girl conclude my day today. Lol~ Actually, since this is a once in a lifetime experience, so I shall describe all my little participants.

#1- Boy. To be honest, I can't remember much about him. *sweats* ((edited)) Oh yes, he like mint ice cream, like me! :)

#2- Boy. This is a little Korean boy who can't speak Korean - but laughed when I said "Ahnnyounghaseyo" to him. Asked me am I learning English here? *pengz* Is my engrish that fobby?!! I was half-amused, and half-offended. Actually, I was more amused than anything. So when I said I speak English and Chinese from young, he asked to say "Yes. No. Hello. Good morning." in Chinese. Hmm.. Apparently, "bu shi" is considered as a baad word. Now, thinking bad about it, did he hear as "bull shit"?? Then, I embarrassed myself halfway through our testing when my stomach growled, REALLY loudly. Lol. He was like, "what's that sound?" *sweats* Sorry #2 boy, it was my stomach. We were both very hungry for morning tea. Heheh..

#3- Girl. A sweet girl who like to read, write and colour. Her favourite colours are, pink, red, green, blue, yellow, purple, black, gold, orange.. and and.. what other colours I have didn't mention yet? Lol.

#4- Boy. Ah, this is the little boy who asked, "Are you from China? You looked like you're from China." -_- Alriight, I shall not comment anything at this one. But I can't help but told him, "Technically yes, since my grandfathers come from China."

#5- Girl. This is another sweet girl, who honestly nodded her head when I asked, "Are you afraid of me?" Hahah.. Poor girl, who had to follow this stranger at the orders of her teacher. I understand... *nod nod* Hopefully, she wasn't that afraid of me at the end of the session. ^^; But she's quite cute too, when I asked her.. "Do you like..... ?" Her responses will always be, "Yes I like........... ..................silence.........." For example,

"What do you like to do?"
"I like.............." silence

"Read?" (I prompted)
"Yes, read!"

"What else....?"
"I like...................." silence.

*sweats*

The same with colours, games, food, stories, movies..

#6 - Girl. This is the little "monster" of the day. Hahhaha.. Just joking. But she was an exteremly enthusiatic little girl. Instead of the usual 45 minutes like other kids, I spent 1 hr and 10 min with her. *sweats* She had to balance my story cards on her head, balance the colourpens, stick the colour/shapes onto her hair to no end, until..she discovered it was more fun when she sticked them onto MY hair. -_-;;; Oh well, whatever. You can do whatever you're happy, as long as you finish the session with me. Lol.. Though at a point of time, I really felt like stopping for her, since she's not concentrating on the last task. Fortunately, I'd perserved abit more, and discovered hey, I still could work with her.. just that it took longer.

So, 6 children for today. Hmm.... alright I guess. I was hoping I could do more though. Too ambitous? Hmm.. let's see how it goes for tomorrow. All boys tomorrow~

Oh yah, I forgot to mention 1 thing. When I led the child to the testing room, I will always close the door, so that outside won't be so distracting for the kid, and I can have some privacy too. But before I do so, I always ask them, "Are you afraid of me?" Hehe.. for some reason, all the little boys are extremely amused by this question, even more when I asked them "Are you really really sure?" when they shook their head. Hmm... I wondered why...

frustrated

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Argh. I think I really need to get hearing aids when I'm back in Singapore.

I received a phonecall from a school this morning.

"Hello, is this Su Li?"

"Yes, I am."

"Hi, I'm ---glibberish----- about your developmental study ---glibberish---- study---- gender difference?"

*glibberish marked the parts of the conversation where I can't hear, can't understand, can't hear clearly.

"Oh, gender difference? No, gender difference is not important in my study."

"---glibberish--- gender difference?"

"oh yes, my study is focusing on the ways individuals interact with other people across different age groups, so it is expected that there will be gender differences but it's not the main focus of my study."

.awkward silence.

"Thank you. *Laughed*"

"Thank you."

CLICK.

---end of phonecall---

Argghhh!!!! Sometimes, I'm REALLY amazed at myself, how I could hold a conversation when 70% of the time I don't know what the other party is talking about. This brought to mind a story title that Ellie once said that she would write, "A MONOLOGUE BETWEEN TWO". How Perfect, with a captial P. *rolled eyes*

300th POST!

The 300th POST!
(o_______o)
Wow, that's a record for me! I just realized, this blog has been with me throughout my whole Perth Uni education. I will thank it properly for its company on the day of my graduation! Ne, okay, the mint in the {chocolate} ? Lol.
Anyway, what's more better to post in my 3ooth post about the news that my brother, yesh MY BROTHER actually held a decent conversation with me over MSN for the FIRST time in dunno how many years?!!! My presence, or attempts to strike a conversation was/were usually ignored. (T^T) Heheh.. It was a pretty normal conversation, until he started insulting me again... -_- Phooey. But! To top it off! I got to see his dorm room~~~ and his block cat! Oooh yesh~~ We had a video call~~~~ (^___________________^)
For such a memorable event... I HAVE TO paste our conversation here! But then..if anyone gonna read it, don't laugh at me, I'm usually quite bimbo with my brother one.. ^^;;

I'm highly amused by this icon. Nope, not by the v person in the front, but by those two people at the back.

Colours & Personality

Everyone should has a go at this~~ It's quite interesting~

CLICK!

Here's my profile- Not totally true, but not totally untrue. :)

You are constantly hoping that your good fellowship and attitude and your 'love for your fellow man (or women)' will give you peace of mind. You need people - people around you to care for you and to show you that they care. It is this hope that keeps you going, the hope that makes you the type of person that indeed you are. Your own need for approval seemingly makes you always ready to help others and in exchange you seek love, warmth and understanding. You will always listen to others and you are open to new ideas which hopefully will prove fruitful and interesting.

Enough is enough. Nothing seems to be working out as you would like it to and it has got to the stage where you feel as if you can't be bothered anymore. The way you feel is that it would be great if you could be cut off from everything and take it easy - be it only for a short time.

You lack confidence and that is a great pity because deep down you are indeed a warm caring person. This lack of confidence is making you wary of being drawn into any open discussion or conflict and so you feel as if you should let matters lie and leave well alone. But there may be a pleasant surprise in store for you. You are beginning to grow and very soon - sooner than you believed possible - this warm loving new you will be available for all to see and to appreciate.

You are an emotional, sincere and impressionable individual experiencing frustration and unnecessary stress. You are carried away by other people's enthusiasm and looking for that idealised relationship, be it in a business or personal situation, which you are able to share with a mutual depth of understanding. You have lowered your defences in the past and you have been hurt, so you are now extremely wary of being exploited. You are still ready to trust people on the condition that they are prepared to offer you proof of their sincerity.

Matters are not all that they would appear to be and you are critical of the existing conditions which you feel are confused and disorganised. You are therefore looking for a modus operendi which will simplify the situation so that you will be able to see the 'trees in the woods'.

Boo`hoo~
It seems that I'm dropping more hair than usual these few days?
Due to stress? Too much junk? PMS? Aging?
I wonder... But it's not like I can afford to drop more hair, I didn't have much to start off with.
Boo`hoo~~ (T^T)

dejected

It took me one day to realize what that phonecall means.

Yesterday after I called the vice-principal whose school seems willing to let me do my study there, I was half-hopeful and half-cheered. Half-cheered because I thought she has already said yes to let me do my study there; half-hopeful, because I'm not soo sure that was the exact thing that I heard.

Well, I think I finally digested what was happening over the phone yesterday. The vice-principal was JUST telling me what the whole procedure will be if I do my study there, and just because I heard "we will distribute the parental consents forms for you", I simply jumped to conclusion that I got the permission. Even when I double confirmed with her later, I think my ears were just picking up the things they want to hear. Haiz.... *heavy sigh* I think I must really get hearing aids when I go out to work and I bet the vice-principal didn't have a good impression of this student from Murdoch University. Honestly, I'm expecting to receive their email anytime today, to inform me that "We are regretful to inform you that we are not able to assist in your study. BLAH BLAH. We wish you good luck in your study." SIGH.

SIGH. Why didn't I just call, and asked could I meet her in person to discuss the study first!!!!??

Conclusion? I simply sux talking on the phone.

SIGH.

beautiful thing

Sunday, August 05, 2007

Alright, I gave up.
Lyrics for Beautiful Thing is too difficult to write.
Words can flow, but they doesn't sound right.
It's too beautiful a song to forcefully change it to something it is not.
Heh.

Anyway~ in memory of the attempt to write~
here are phrases I'm quite like, but unfortunately doesn't fit into the song. Lol.

COLOURSlovers.com

strange quiz

Thursday, August 02, 2007

I was bored, so I did the quiz that my friend sent me.

Your DBSK boyfriend is JAEJOONG
You will last for 100 days
He will love you truly
You will cry for him
He will say i love you
Your next DBSK boyfriend is YUNHO

This is so strange, if he loves me truly, why will he break up with me?! LOL. Anyway, that 100 days reminded me of this Taiwanese drama "Smile Pasta" in which the female lead has some kind of curse whereby her love relationships could only last for 100 days or 3 months. So with the strange results of this quiz, I could picture... this random cheesy scenario of a couple...

Location: In the park
Time: At night
Background music: I'm sorry but I love you.

S and J holding hands strolling in the park.

"Oppa, thank you for such a wonderful day. I can't believe that you actually remember our 100th day anniversary." S smiled prettily.

J smiled back, tightening his hold on S.

"Everything has been so wonderful. Theme park. The dinner. The roses. Today will definitely be my most memorable memory with you." S sighed with contentment.

Spotting a bench (of course, we must have a street lamp next to it), J pulled S over and sat down.

"It's almost midnight now. Shall we enjoyed the last few moments of today?" J asked, throwing an arm over S's shoulders, cuddling her close.

However, for a moment, it appeared to S that J seemed a bit distanced suddenly, like.. he was waiting for something.. something to happen. But deciding that she was just thinking too much, she cuddled closer to him, looking up at the twinkling stars that were unusually brighter than other nights.

Just as S was enjoying the peace between them, J's voice quietly sounded above her head. "S, I have something to tell you."

"Ye, oppa?" S looked up.

"Let's break up."

With no pre-warning, J planted a bomb in front of her.

S stunned, wondering did she hear him wrongly.

"What did you just say, oppa? Could you repeat that again?"

"I said.. Let's. Break. Up."

For the moment, S seemed to blank out. She stared at J's lips, watching them moving, murmuring words, but no sounds seemed to reach her ears. Her world was silent, or rather suddenly filled with loud buzzing sounds that appeared in her head from nowhere.

"Why?" S asked.

"I thought we were... we were..." S tripped over her words, unable to get a proper sentence out.

"I know, I know.. It's all my fault. I love you, very very much. But, we can't be together. And the problem doesn't lie with you. It's me." J looked at her with sadness in his eyes.

"Why?" S's view of J was blurry. Without realizing it, tears were falling slowly down her cheeks. "Is there somebody else?"

"No.. It's not. You see... *goes off to explain about his 100th day curse*"

"....."

"This is ridiculous! I can't believe that you're breaking with me for such a stupid reason like that!" Unlike earlier on, S could only feel anger brewing inside her.

"It's not stupid. It's true!"

"Yes it is! What will happen if we don't?! You're being too superstitious!"

For the first time in three months, the couple had a quarrel, on the day when they were going to break up.

"I'm not. I have tested the curse many times. If I don't break up with the wrong girl, a large wart/pimple will appear on my nose on the next day!"

"What?!"

"You just see for youself!" J dragged S nearer, shoving his face right in front of her. True enough, when she stared at his nose, there seemed to be a slight reddish bump that seemed extremely enthusiastic to see the world any moment.

“So what?! It’s only a pimple. It’s not like you don’t have them when you’re younger.”

“Are you out of your mind?! Could you imagine a pimple, on this handsome face? It’s gonna spoil everything! It’s going to destroy my image!” J yelled, unable to believe that S, the girl he once thought was the most suitable for him, couldn’t see the seriousness of the situation.

Then, it just hit him. “Gosh, the curse is right! You are the wrong girl for me!” His eyes brightened with THE realization.

“Now that I broken up with you.. Everything will be alright again!”

“Kim Jaejoong! You….!” S couldn’t believe her ears, staring at obviously relieved J.

He only stared back unemotionally at her.

“You idiot!” She swung her bag at him before running away, breaking down in tears.

****
Author's note: Okay, I'm getting bored with the writing of this story, so anyway, the ending of the story is..

J chose his appearance over his girlfriend (as with all his ex-girlfriends). The crying S while running away from him, knocked into Y (the next boyfriend) at the entrance of the park, or perhaps at the train station. Some incident happened between the two of them, so S and Y became a couple right there and then. BUT, unknown to her, Y had a little problem of his own, so... But that is another story for another day. : )
